An Academy Award winner for his dramatic portray of a convict in the 60s classic Cool Hand Luke, George Kennedy passed away Sunday morning.

Although Kennedy was known for his tough characters, he was a versatile performer and author. After winning the Oscar, he went on to make a presence in Hollywood as one of its most formidable supporting actors. For younger generations, he is known for his comedic turns in the Naked Gun movie series, as well as a few seasons on the soap opera hit Dallas. Other acting credits include The Dirty Dozen and Guns of the Magnificent Seven.

George Kennedy was 91 years old.
