Now that Lady Gaga has made it official by signing on the dotted line and joining season six of the critically praised franchise American Horror Story, the Grammy and newly minted Golden Globe winner will have her work cut out for her. Not only will she have to prove her first serious foray into acting was no fluke, but she will also have to spread her wings even further as an artist, moving beyond the role of The Countess which was tailor made – and written – for her.
Surrounded by some of the best talent in the industry in Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Dennis O’Hare, Sarah Paulson, and more, it was almost impossible for Lady Gaga not to come out triumphant as the bloodsucker/starf*cker Countess. Indeed, from the moment she entered the screen, fans of the show ate her up as she devoured characters on the screen with her lady killer moves and penchant for blood. Season six was more closely aligned to the original premise of American Horror Story than its predecessor and interest in whether or not Lady Gaga could pull off a real acting gig meant more viewers. Although critics claimed season six was more of an ensemble than the years when it was led by Jessica Lange, when nomination time came around, Gaga was lauded for holding her own with Bassett, Bates & Co. and now the stakes have been raised.
Can Lady Gaga prove the naysayers wrong yet again?
For those that saw season five, at times it played out like an extended music video to one of her more macabre songs. With her elaborate costumes, extensive sets, and sexually ambiguous moves and motives, The Countess and Lady Gaga were a match made in hell. But in season six, she may risk typecasting by appearing as what fans have come to expect. The question on many lips is whether or not Lady Gaga can play a demure type? Can she play it down? Can she not go over the top and still deliver?
Filming begins in June and very little is known currently, but with a stellar cast waiting to surround her, Lady Gaga already has a strong base on which to grow. She has spread her wings exponentially as an artist the last few years and now her little monsters are eager to find out if she has even more to offer.
