There are few artists that cover the broad spectrum of musicality in such a way as international DJane and drummer Marie Leão. The Brazilian-born, Berlin-based musician is known for fusing her love of electronica and tech-house to create her own unique brand of music that is made even more unique once she gets behind a set of drums to work her magic.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Leão grew up surrounded by a vast range of music that took her from disco to soul, funk to jazz, rock and beyond. Along the way, she took her love for these genres and merged them with the native sounds of her own country – the samba. Although she began her career as a journalist and agent, she soon found herself in the midst of music clubs and special events that eventually took her to the other side of the world where her career as a musician began to take off to another level.
Upon entering the multicultural city of Berlin, Marie found herself immediately in her element, and her global influences began to make an impact in a scene that cultivated and influenced her artistry even further. In Germany, Leão was not just a journalist with a pen and paper, but a journalist telling a story through her music, a sonic soldier eager to share her story to an inviting world that was ready to take her in. Marie’s body of work is more than just impressive – it covers an expansive range of genres and acts internationally, and she is noted for working with a diverse group of artists to create something specific and special for each audience. As an expatriate, she continues to give others insight into her country with workshops, donating her time and energy to causes that are close to her heart.
There are few DJanes or musicians around that can ignite a crowd as she does and it is without question the merging of Brazil and Berlin together that have given her an advantage in how to tap into and then sonically seize a moment.
Welcome to Marie Leão, the beautiful life, and the beautiful beat.
