These days, it is getting more and more difficult for pop stars to make a name for themselves with the onslaught of television shows seeking to find the next big star in nearly every major country in the world. However, true talent always seems to find a way to shine through and nowhere is that more evident of late than in Mark Maze, a British pop producer that has finally laid down the gauntlet, the tracks, and the vocals to produce a debut album that delivers across the board.

Uncomfortable Truths is an album that satiates sonically on several fronts. Mainly pop, there are forays into electro and rock on this album, but it is with rhythm and blues that Maze connects with listeners. Songs in this genre on the CD include ‘Crying Game’ and ‘Your Bite Was Beautiful’. The lead-off single, ‘The Devil May Cry’, dares to be a ballad when most pop albums rarely veer from the formula of taking you directly to the dance floor. In this way, Maze sets out to prove that he is not AutoTune wonder and that once stripped down and laid bare, he truly has a voice worth listening to, free of vocal gymnastics or production histrionics. Another noted aspect of Maze’s success is his evident songwriting ability, a quality missing in many pop stars as of late that rely on a slew of mega-producers to convey a message. In songs like ‘Crying Game’ and ’2nd Best’, it is easy to see why Mark Maze has made a name for himself behind the scenes as a producer. Clearly, he knows the his strengths as a singer and plays them up well, with a few songs directly showcasing his capable tenor voice.

In the world of pop music, these days it is more about looks than actual talent, yet Mark Maze could definitely fall into any boy band with ease or he could do as he is seeking to now: set out on a musical adventure on his own, call the shots, and see how far he can take his solo ambitions. Uncomfortable Truths is definitely a CD in the right direction that is a great start to what could possibly be a long career on the stage if he connects with enough listeners.
