Kate Winslet

It’s always harder to accept when people you admire – or at least want to – make a move that does not sit well with you.

Enter the f*ckery.

Enter, Kate Winslet.

A few days ago, Kate accepted the London Critics’ Circle award, and after months (actually, years) of dodging the elephant in the room and weaving around the obvious, many thought she would finally answer her actions directly when it comes to working with Woody Allen and Roman Polanski, two men who have a long history of sexual abuse allegations swirling around them that go back generations. Instead, she gave a response that was so tepid, she should not even have bothered…

“As women around the world and from all walks of life marched last weekend, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to stand here this evening and keep to myself some bitter regrets that I have about poor decisions to work with individuals with whom I wish I had not. It has become clear to me that by not saying anything, I might be adding to the anguish of many courageous women and men.” She added, “there are directors, producers, and men of power who have for decades been awarded and applauded for their highly regarded work by both this industry and moviegoers alike.”

Now, we all know the names. We really do. But Kate couldn’t call them out directly? She had no problem checking Harvey Weinstein‘s oil, but she has a case of the wishy-washies when it comes to Woody Allen and Roman Polanki?

And while we at Verbal SLAPS love Kate’s work, but it must be said:

This is NOT what a feminist looks like.

She has basically been forced to do what she knew she should have done from JUMP, and we hope people remember that, because at the end of the day, she basically chose to side with him until her peers forced her to face the repercussions of not standing by victims and being complicit.

And let this be a note to the average person out there to NOT look to Hollywood and its stars for role models and leaders, because what this entire movement is proving is that they are 9 times out of 10 the direct opposite of that.

So whatever you may think about some of the first women to come forward, at least give them credit for coming forward first and risking it all. Rose McGowan has endured alot of backlash for what she is saying, but her approach has empowered far more women that hindered them. Women – and men – need to feel as if they can say it loud and not be ashamed to do so. That is what real progress looks like.

Kate Winslet’s half-hearted, tepid speech is NOT about it.

She could have kept THAT.

There are countless celebrities that have worked with Woody Allen, and despite the allegations, many continue to defend and support him. Even during this #TimesUp and #MeToo movement, they cannot be deterred. And then there are those that act by polls, attempting to cover their asses, and rack up points as they try to artfully distance themselves from the flames.

These actions are not to be forgotten during these times when the world needs true allies. Do we really want people like this claiming to be for the cause? There is NO time for those straddling the fence in dire times such as these.

The only thing Winslet just proved with her speech is that it is possible to say a lot…

and still not say a goddamn thing.

This pointless speech is a slap in the face of women worldwide and the feminist stance she claims to possess.
