NYC artist Tomas Doncker is on a journey to spread global soul to a worldwide scale. The sound of his latest album elicits rhythms from both East and West Africa, as well as the Carribean. The album diverges across several genres of music, giving listeners a snapshot to music from all over the world.

For over twenty years, Doncker has made a name for himself in the New York City music scene. He has worked with a long list of heavyweights in the industry, including artists Yoko Ono, Bonnie Raitt, and Me’shell N’degeocello to name a few. His latest release finds him paying tribute to Howlin’ Wolf, the great blues legend. “The Tomas Doncker Band’s Howlin’ Wolf E.P.”, was released this month on True Groove Records.

This summer, Tomas will create the score to Diablo Love, from playwright Mando Alvarado. Directed by Alfred Preisser and presented by Time Warner, the premiere was at NYC SummerStage Theatre. The new EP will feature “Shook Down”, a piece co-written with the Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Yusef Komonyakaa. The album focuses on the legacy of classic blues and Howlin’ Wolf. Rounding out the Tomas Doncker band are: Dave Barnes – harp, Nicke Rolfe – piano, James Dellatacoma – guitar, Josh David – bass, and Damon Duewhite – drums.

The five tracks have a distinct Doncker touch on them, channeling a classic blues production, with a bit of edginess and raciness thrown in for added measure. For those that enjoy Tomas’ prominent vocals, they are clearly evident on tracks like Spoonful and Smokestack Lightning. The latter, written by Howlin’ Wolf himself is the funk fans are expecting, delivered full throttle in a moving tribute.
